Financial Controller

Our client, a Medford, OR based nonprofit is seeking a Financial Controller that will report directly to the Executive Director (and indirectly to KDP - acting as CFO). The Organization has multiple different program services that require compliance with federal and state grant requirement (including Uniform Guidance). Additionally, the organization has multiple managed assets ranging from real property to a managed investment portfolio. This is a great opportunity to get involved with this organization as KDP is leading several process revisions and assisting with the redevelopment of the accounting and finance function. The Controller responsibilities are as follows:

Basic Function: The controller position is accountable for the accounting operations of the Organization, to include the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls and budgets designed to mitigate risk, enhance the accuracy of the Organization's reported financial results, ensure that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles, ensure compliance with federal and state grant compliance requirements, cash management and risk management. This individual should also have a general understanding of reimbursements from multiple payor sources (i.e. private, commercial, governmental).

Compensation: Compensation will range between $75,000 and $85,000 annually.

Principal Accountabilities:

Management

  • Maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures
  • Manage outsourced functions
  • Working with the contracted CFO, oversee the operations of the accounting department, including the design of an organizational structure adequate for achieving the department's goals and objectives
  • Transactions

  • Ensure that accounts payable are paid in a timely manner
  • Ensure that all reasonable discounts are taken on accounts payable
  • Ensure that accounts receivable are collected promptly
  • Process payroll in a timely manner
  • Ensure that monthly bank reconciliations are completed
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and modify when necessary
  • Maintain an orderly accounting filing system
  • Maintain a system of controls over accounting transactions
  • Ensure requests for reimbursements and reported results of grants are accurate and in compliance with the provisions of the grant
  • Reporting

  • Issue timely and complete financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
  • Calculate and issue financial and operating metrics
  • Manage the production of the annual budget and forecasts
  • Calculate variances from the budget and report significant issues to management
  • Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations
  • Compliance

  • Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors for the annual audit
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants (when/if applicable)
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Desired Qualifications: The controller candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in accounting, and 5+ years of progressively responsible experience for a major company or division of a large corporation. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.

    Working Conditions: Primarily in an office environment. Will be expected to travel as needed to Organization locations. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected.

    Financial Consulting Staff

    Job Description/Profile

  • Assistance in identifying and prioritizing areas for improvement in client accounting environment
  • Ability to be innovative and design with little guidance or direction in approach for developing and implementing solutions
  • Provides leadership in the development and continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives for client
  • Develops and maintains strong communication skills in working relationships with client and team
  • Researches accounting issues
  • Develops and Implements financial reporting processes and reports for review with client
  • Advises client on proper accounting processes and controls for added efficiency and correctness
  • Assists and oversees the monthly close process of various clients
  • Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • One to three years accounting experience preferred
  • Well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles
  • Proficiency in use of computers and computer accounting software programs
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Good time management and organizational skills

    Staff Auditor (entry level)

    Staff Auditor (Experienced Level)

    Job Description/Profile

  • Performs detailed audit procedures on financial statement account balances, prepares and adjusts workpapers from clients’ trial balance
  • Identifies potential management letter comments
  • Researches accounting issues
  • Recognizes potential problem areas in specific engagements and discusses them with engagement supervisor
  • Participates in the engagement planning process
  • Performs other accounting, auditing, and consulting duties as needed in engagements and as assigned by supervisory personnel
  • Assumes full responsibility (under supervision) for preparation of compiled and reviewed financial statements
  • Assists with more complicated segments of audit and accounting engagements
  • Drafts annual financial statements, including footnote disclosures
  • Becomes proficient at preparing financial statements using the firm’s software programs
  • May train other staff auditors
  • Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting; 3.5 or higher GPA in major preferred; advanced degree preferred
  • One to three years audit experience in the commercial, governmental, non-profit sectors; public accounting experience preferred
  • Well-rounded knowledge of accounting principles; knowledge of Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS), Government Auditing Standards (GAS Yellow Book) and Generally Accepted Governmental Accounting Standards (GAGAS) a plus
  • Proficiency in use of computers and computer accounting software programs
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Either holds a current and valid certified public accountant’s license or is working toward obtaining the license by taking and passing the applicable state CPA exam
  • Good time management and organizational skills
